The Reality and Challenges of Implementing Self-Directed Learning Strategies in Arab Islamic Private Universities: A Qualitative Study in the Republic of Benin from Faculty Members’ Perspectives

Abstract
The study aimed to examine the current state of implementing self-directed learning strategies among faculty members in Arab Islamic private universities in the Republic of Benin. It further sought to identify the challenges they encounter in applying these strategies, to determine the requirements necessary for their effective implementation, and to propose recommendations for enhancing faculty members’ competencies in utilizing self-directed learning strategies. A qualitative research design was employed to obtain rich and in-depth data about the study through semi-structured interviews as the primary data collection instrument. The study sample consisted of 25 faculty members during the academic year 1447 AH (2026).. The findings revealed a near consensus among the participants regarding the current state of implementing self-directed learning strategies. The results also indicated agreement that the challenges faced are substantial and significantly affect the effectiveness of implementing such strategies in private universities. Moreover, the findings demonstrate broad agreement among participants on a wide range of essential and fundamental requirements necessary for the successful application of self-directed learning strategies.
