Abstract

The Quran treats knowledge not as a peripheral concern but as the very foundation on which faith rests and the entire Islamic way of life holds together. It is no exaggeration to say that seeking knowledge, in the Quranic view, ranks among the foremost obligations placed on every Muslim. What makes this emphasis all the more striking is the setting in which it first appeared. The message came to an unlettered community, one with no established tradition of scholarly inquiry - a sharp contrast to the intellectual cultures of Rome and Persia at the time. That very gap highlights how central knowledge was meant to be in the civilizational project Islam set out to build. This paper takes up two guiding questions: What does the Quran mean by knowledge, and where does it locate its sources? And how did Muslim scholars, working across a wide range of disciplines, draw on the Quran to shape their own research methods? The findings point to a Quranic vision of knowledge that is distinct from purely human frameworks in its concept, nature, and method. It holds revelation and reason together rather than setting them apart; it links empirical observation with theoretical reflection, and ties learning to practice. Embracing this vision gave Muslim scholars a disciplined yet flexible methodology that carried knowledge to remarkable heights and allowed them to pass it on with integrity. None of this was accidental. It grew directly out of Islam's own encouragement of creativity and inquiry across every field, without ranking one discipline above another. The result was a body of civilizational achievement that stayed true to the spirit of the faith while pushing the boundaries of what was known.
