Abstract

Knowledge of the occasions of revelation (asbāb al-nuzūl) of the Qur’anicsūrahs and verses is among the essential sciences that researchers and students of Islamic studies must master, as it greatly assists in understanding the Qur’an and deriving its rulings. Indeed, knowledge of the cause leads to knowledge of the effect. For this reason, scholars of Qur’anic exegesis devoted considerable attention to the causes of revelation, addressing them in their commentaries—often at the beginning of each sūrah. Some scholars further dedicated independent works to this subject, expanding their research and analysis in specialized writings that merit careful study and scholarly introduction. Accordingly, the researcher deemed it appropriate to select this topic for the present paper, which is divided into two main sections. The first examines the concept of the causes of revelation, the benefits of studying them, and the historical development of this field. The second section introduces and analyzes the most significant classical and contemporary works authored on asbāb al-nuzūl, highlighting their distinctive features. In conducting this study, the researcher employed both the inductive and descriptive methodologies. The inductive approach was utilized in collecting and surveying the relevant authored works in this field, while the descriptive method was applied in presenting and analyzing these works.
