This research explores the origins of Imām al-Shāfiʿī’s (may Allah have mercy on him) methodology of legal classification, with a particular focus on the evidences supporting this approach as presented in his seminal work al-Umm. The study is largely confined to the sections on number, ẓihār, liʿān, and intentional wounds. The significance of this research arises from the eminent scholarly stature of Imām al-Shāfiʿī in jurisprudence and its principles, as well as from the central importance of al-Umm within the Shāfiʿī school in particular, and within the four Sunni schools of jurisprudence in general. Methodologically, the research employs an inductive–deductive approach. The structure includes an introduction, five chapters, and a conclusion that outlines the key findings and recommendations. Among the most important conclusions is that the foundations of scientific research methodology are rooted in, and derived from, the works of earlier scholars. Accordingly, the study recommends giving due attention to the classical works and adopting them as a basis for the methodologies of later scholarly research.
