Contextual Implications of the Story of Jesus, Peace Be Upon Him, in Surat Al-Ma'idah

Abstract

Islam pays great attention to highlighting the true image of religion and correcting misconceptions, a theme that is clearly evident in Surah Al-Ma’idah through the diverse contexts of the topics it encompasses. This study aims to investigate the role of context and underscore its significance in Qur'anic studies and the interpretation of Qur'anic texts. It seeks to illustrate the deep connection between the thematic coherence of the surah and the context surrounding its verses. Additionally, the study aims to highlight the importance of Qur'anic context and its relation to the narratives and events described in the surah, while extracting lessons and guidance from them. It particularly focuses on the story of Jesus (peace be upon him) in Surah Al-Ma’idah, examining the context in which it is presented and relating it to the overall components of the surah. The research also takes into account the historical context of the story’s revelation and applies its implications to modern-day realities.To achieve its objectives, the research utilizes inductive, analytical, descriptive, and inferential methods. This study’s results are as follows. It confirms the Importance of context in understanding Quranic texts, and also confirms the strong link between Qur'anic stories and the surah in which they appear, including its title, theme, and all its elements. It emphasizes the close relationship between Qur'anic narratives and the historical context of their revelation. Furthermore, this study also points out that Qur'anic stories does not only teach morals, but also it sheds light on aspects of da'wah (Islamic preaching), education, and belief, which are essential to help preachers in their work. What makes this study unique is its look at the contextual meanings of Jesus's (peace be upon him) story in Surah Al-Ma'idah from a new angle.
