Abstract

 


Free reading is an essential feature of any progressive nation. This research aims to determine the level of free reading amongst Qatar University students, to achieve the knowledge and cultural excellence sought by the State of Qatar in accordance with its “Qatar Vision 2030”. The query of the study was “the level of free reading amongst Qatar University students, and its association with the identity?” this query was answered through an empirical study using descriptive analytical method, two tools were used: questionnaire and interview.


The study results showed lack of motivation for students to read, and the existence of preoccupation with the curricula and achievement by attaining grades at the expense of free reading, the advent negative role of social media in consuming students' time. In investigating what type if materials are popular for free reading, while religious materials came as the first choice among the study sample -which enhances and strengthens identity- reading in field of history, -which is as well an integral part of an individual's identity- did not receive enough attention by the study sample.


The study recommends that Qatar University focus on finding a practical and scientific solution for the lack of motivation amongst students', as well the need to link courses to free reading, and finally review courses assignments as an integrated package per semester.
