Abstract

This study entitled: (Western Media and the Construction of Stereotypical Images of Islam and Muslims: Islamophobia as a Case Study) examines the role of Western media in shaping the stereotypical image of Islam and Muslims, using Islamophobia as an analytical framework to understand the interaction between media discourse and broader cultural and political structures. The study is based on the assumption that media representations are not neutral reflections of reality, but rather constructed narratives produced through selective coverage, framing processes, linguistic choices, and cultural representations. The research adopts an analytical approach grounded in discourse analysis and framing theory, in addition to drawing on critical studies of Orientalism and Islamophobia. It explores the historical and epistemological roots that contributed to the formation of stereotypical images of Islam and analyzes the key media mechanisms and tools that reinforce these representations, including selective reporting, framing strategies, loaded terminology, visual portrayals, and digital media platforms. The findings indicate that contemporary media portrayals of Islam are deeply influenced by long-standing historical and intellectual legacies, which have been reactivated in modern political and security contexts, particularly after the events of September 11, 2001. The study also demonstrates that these representations have significant social and political consequences, including the reinforcement of prejudice, the erosion of social cohesion, the legitimization of restrictive policies, and the distortion of Islam’s global image. The study concludes that addressing Islamophobia requires not only critiquing media discourse but also understanding the structural mechanisms through which such representations are produced and normalized. It recommends promoting more balanced media practices, enhancing media literacy, and encouraging cross-cultural dialogue to foster more accurate and nuanced representations of Islam and Muslims.
