Jurisprudential Corrections, Abū al-Maʿālī al-Juwaynī, Nihāyat al-Maṭlab, Shāfiʿī SchoolAbstract
This study investigates the legal corrections, supplements, and critical remarks advanced by Abū al-Maʿālī al-Juwaynī on the works of his father, Abū Muḥammad al-Juwaynī, particularly in the prayer section of Nihāyat al-Maṭlab fī Dirāyat al-Madhhab. In these notes, he diverged from the established positions of al-Muʿtamad. The research—organized into an introduction, four chapters, and a conclusion—addresses a scholarly gap, as these corrective notes had not been studied independently, despite frequent claims that Islamic jurisprudence is rigid and imitative. The central question is: which specific jurisprudential issues did Abū al-Maʿālī diverge from in his supplementation or correction of his father’s views? To answer this, the study employs an inductive-analytical method, tracing and examining these corrections, and comparing them with the views, evidence, and reasoning of other jurists. The findings highlight the intellectual prominence of both father and son, the diversity of Abū al-Maʿālī’s methods of correction, and his scholarly objectivity in critique. Ultimately, the research demonstrates that such corrections reflect his independence of thought and contribute to enriching the scholarly discourse, affirming the vitality and dynamism of Islamic law.
