Abstract

This research investigates the origins, methodologies, and impact of German Orientalism, with a focus on its role within the broader field of Oriental studies. The central research question is: What was the contribution of German Orientalism to the study of Islamic heritage? This inquiry emerges from the observation that Edward Said, in his critique of Orientalist traditions, largely excluded the German school, thereby raising questions about its distinct character and scholarly contributions. The study aims to highlight the efforts of German Orientalists in serving Islamic and Arab heritage, particularly through their work in cataloging manuscripts, editing classical texts, translating, and conducting Qur’anic and linguistic studies. It further seeks to demonstrate how German Orientalists distinguished themselves from other European schools by exhibiting relative neutrality and scientific objectivity. Methodologically, the research employs the historical method to trace the development of German Orientalism, the analytical–descriptive method to examine its defining features, and the comparative method to identify its differences from other Orientalist traditions. The findings reveal that German Orientalism, unlike its French and British counterparts, was not primarily driven by colonial or missionary motives. Instead, it was characterized by accuracy, rigor, and a scholarly commitment to objectivity in the study of Islamic heritage. German Orientalists made significant contributions to Qur’anic studies, the Prophet’s biography, Arabic linguistics, and the preservation and critical editing of manuscripts—ensuring their lasting scholarly impact. The research concludes by underscoring the importance of studying the German Orientalist school in order to deepen understanding of the intellectual and historical relationship between East and West. It also recommends further comparative research on the contributions of German Orientalists, as such studies enrich the Arab–Islamic intellectual tradition and promote intercultural dialogue.
