Abstract

This research aims to study polysemy of the word (athar) in the Qur’an (a semantic analytical study). Research problem lies in proving that (athar) in the Qur’an is polysemous, which necessitates clarifying its meanings with evidence, revealing the confusion that comes to mind about its meaning, and the aspect of rhetorical miracle in it, as it was not mentioned in the books of al-Wujūh wa al-Nadhā’ir (similarities and counterparts). The research aims to define the concept of polysemy, and explains reasons for its occurrence in the Qur’an and importance, and proves that (athar) is polysemous, and unveils its meanings with evidence, removing the confusion about it, and manifesting the rhetorical miracle of the Qur’an in it. The research used the method of induction to trace and count verses, studying, analyzing, and deducing. Results include confirmation that (athar) is polysemous. It is the greatest form of rhetorical miracle. Athar has six different meanings, proven by evidence from the context, reasons for the revelation, readings, and the aforementioned hadith narrations. Science students and researchers are recommended to reflect and extract polysemous words that were not mentioned in the books of al-Wujūh wa al-Nadhā’ir in order to enrich this great area.
