Abstract

The aim of this research is to identify the level of oral performance of second year secondary school students in the light of critical speaking skills. The ability to speak critically and its skills contribute to the development of the learners' ability to go beyond the information provided, to analyze and evaluate it, and to adopt a critical stance. Critical speaking also contributes to developing the learners' critical thinking skills. In terms of the ability to select words, express ideas, form them, and present them in a logical and convincing manner. It is possible to contribute to solving the problem of this research by answering the following main question: "What is the level of oral performance of second year secondary school students in the light of critical speaking skills?" The researcher used the descriptive approach when preparing a list of critical speaking skills, and describing and interpreting the results. The results showed that the percentage of female students' ability to critical speaking skills was low. It ranged between 32.4-43.4%, and the mastery of critical speaking skills as a whole reached 38.6%. This confirms the poor level of high school students' possession of critical speaking skills (basic general skills, skills of presenting a point of view on the topic of the conversation, argumentation skills, supporting the conversation with arguments and evidence, skills for discussing points of view). The researcher recommended the need to pay attention to critical speaking and include its skills in these curricula In the different stages of education, and the inclusion of various activities that contribute to the development of these skills because of their active role in provoking critical thinking among students, and enabling them to be able to express their opinions and their points of view logically, and to indicate the way of inference, and to discuss the opposite point of view in agreement or disagreement, and to issue judgments in In the light of objective criteria without bias or fanaticism, as well as facing many temptations and intellectual and emotional influences, and training teachers and teachers of the Arabic language during service on critical speaking skills, and strategies for its development and correction.
