Abstract
The study discussed the rectification of the development level of communication skills for children with autism spectrum disorder. The problem of this study is stemmed from the lack of studies that addressed the communication skills which can be developed for children with autism spectrum disorder and lack of educational kits which help in developing their communication skills.The main purpose of this study was to prepare a learning kit which was designed to develop communication skills for children with autism spectrum disorder. It also aimed to identify the needs of speech therapists in this kit and identify the communication skills which can be developed for children with autism spectrum disorder. In order to achieve the research goals , the researcher adopted a qualitative approach in this research , A survey was used as a tool to collect data from the sample. Strategies of teaching children with autism spectrum disorder survey was designed for speech pathologists , teachers , and parents of children with autism spectrum disorder. Another survey of the needs of speech pathologists to a curriculum which may assist them in speech therapy sessions was prepared by the researcher. The researcher prepared a list of communication skills which can be developed for children with autism spectrum disorder during their speech therapy sessions.The sample of the study consisted of speech pathologists, autism teachers and parents of children with autism spectrum disorder. Due to the concurrence of aims and studies from pathologists and teachers of autistic children ; a sample of few autism teachers was randomly selected by the researcher at Saudi Arabia.The study concluded that all of it’s research sample have agreed on insistent need of articulation teachers for a clear and worthy educational content.It is deducted that they need a content which can be successfully utilized in their articulation and communication sessions with an average success rate of 4.07 out of 5. Educational units were designed that aims in developing expressive and receptive language.These units were designed depending on curriculum components (objectives, educational tools , teaching procedures , and evaluation). A set of communication skills (the imitation skill , attention and visual communication skills , social and communication skills , receptive language skills , expressive language skills) have been identified to be necessarily developed for ASD children.The study also concluded that the majority of the research sample agreed on the insistent need of educational strategies to develop ASD children communicational skills with an average success rate of 4.22 out of 5.
