Abstract

This paper deals with the science of Strange Prophetic Hadith (Ghareeb al-Hadith) and its impact on enriching the Arabic lexicography. It tackles the problematic relationship between the science of Strange Hadith and linguistics interms of originality and emergence. It discusses the influence of this science on the early generation of Muslim scholars and linguistics since the days of  Al-Khaleel Ibn Ahmad Al-Farahidi, by investigating the strange words of hadiths in their linguistic settings and explaining their influence. The first section defined the strange hadith from a linguistic point of view. The second was devoted to citing the strange hadiths in the sciences of language, the eloquence of the phrase in the hadith and its linguistic status and the position of linguists on citing hadiths. The third section dealt with the effect of strange words of hadiths in expanding lexical connotations.


The study concluded that linguists' dictionaries were influenced by the strange words of hadith, and that the founders of Arabic dictionaries were among the first to cite hadiths in their books, and that some contemporary claims that strange hadiths were only but mere reference was invalid.
